The drive unit of an electric car combines the motor, the power inverter and a single-speed reduction gearbox. Although it has far fewer moving parts than a petrol engine, bearings, seals, coolant passages and inverter power modules can still fail — usually announcing themselves with a whine, a vibration or a sudden loss of power.
